It is a project of a community center connected with vehicle service station, located in the town of Castelo da Maia in the Porto agglomeration area. The aim of the project was to deal with the issues of anonymity suburbs and the role of the road in shaping the identity of the place. Local sense of identity is given here by preserving the existing historic building of the old factory. The newly introduced feature is also reflected in modern minimalist form, also contrasting with the existing material.
The project is an attempt to exploit the potential of the present things like ruins. It shows that tackling even the difficult situation, gives the most interesting final results. There is no interference with the historic fabric. The modern approach to refurbishment in architecture is no longer about restoring historical forms or imitating old details.
